The Language Exchange

Welcome to our Language Exchange! This blog is a platform for my students to publish their own texts in the languages I teach them. I think this might be a good way to motivate them to learn languages. Feel free to comment on the posts. And please be nice. (Every student has written an introductory post, usually accompanied by a photo. You can find them in the archives.)

Hip Hop - by Anna-Lena

Today Anna-Lena will try to describe the hip-hop style to you:

Hip-hop music comes from black funk and soul music. There are many different styles of hip- hop music, some also include rap. Some hip-hoppers do breakdance or beatboxing. The graffiti culture is another part of hip-hop. Typical clothes people wear are baggy pants and jackets, sneakers, caps. A few wear necklaces in bling-bling style. As the origins of hip-hop come from the African American culture, you can often hear AAVE (African American Vernacular English).

I don't like hip-hop because I don't like the clothes they wear and I listen to another kind of music. What do you think about hip-hop?

The story of the painter's broken foot - by H.

Last week on Friday I wanted to go upstairs and then I slipped and broke my right foot. On Saturday morning I went to the hospital to check the foot. The surgeon said we had to x-ray it. Result: the foot is broken, a very complicated fracture. That's why I had to undergo surgery. They inserted a metal plate with four screws. In half a year I will go back to the hospital in order to have it removed.
And now I will stay at home for 6 - 8 weeks and can't paint.

Still here - by Klara

It's been a long time since I wrote for the blog, but I'm still here ... In the meantime I have begun to learn French. At the moment I think the language is easy and fun! But I don't know how long it will last.
By the way, I have had my hair cut. Look at the photo:

And this is what I looked like before.

Twitter - by Laura

In her last English lesson Laura and I talked about a new way of communication called Twitter. Here's what she summarized:

Tweeting is posting what the user is doing, links to websites or any other information which your "followers" can read. I wonder what is the purpose of this?! Since no one has the chance to answer to the post, it is a very one-sided way of communicating. Unless the Twitterer has subscribed to you and you have subscribed to him, you don't have the chance to stay in direct contact with him or her.
So why are many people so crazy about this hype - simply because it is new? Or because of need for recognition, or to get the latest news about celebrities - because actually the Buckingham Palace and Arnold Schwarzenegger use Twitter for their announcements. Our enormous need to be up to date with the lastest news (e. g. Michael Jackson's death) is responsible for regular breakdowns of this site.
I heard of people who are addicted to Twitter. For example, the British singer Lilly Allen who has acknowledged that she spent several hours a day on this site and that her boyfriend gave her one option: Twitter or J. She decided in favour of her boyfriend.
But, in earnest, if you stay on Twitter, you can read a lot of drivel, unimportant information about people who are sitting on a bench or other stupid things. It can be true that many people, like Obama or huge companies, have the chance to profit from Twitter, but is this way of communication intelligent? Goodness knows.

Maybe someone can give us an insight here? Anyone out there using Twitter? Please enlighten us!
