Immigration and Multiculturalism in the USA - by Daniel
This is a summary of a text Daniel read in his English class:
The USA is a country of many different cultures, peoples and religions from all over the world. The first settlers came from northern and estern Europe. The first European colonies got together to form a big nation whose main language became English. Not included in this nation were the Native Americans and Africans who were kept as slaves until 1865. In the 19th century people from eastern and western Europe immigrated to the USA. The highest immigration took place between 1880 and 1924, when 26 million people arrived in the country. The American society was regarded as a melting pot of different nations, cultures and religions. In 1965 Latin Americans and Asians immigrated to the USA. More and more illegal immigrants came to the USA; in 1995 there were 1.5 million of them. In all parts of the country the time came when non-whites outnumbered whites. As the WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants) had to give up their cultural dominance, they were the ones who most criticized multiculturalism.
Some people are worried about the USA becoming a nation of co-existing but seperate ethnic groups, other people say that this is what America's identity is made.
What do you think? Do you have any experience with this?
