The Language Exchange

Welcome to our Language Exchange! This blog is a platform for my students to publish their own texts in the languages I teach them. I think this might be a good way to motivate them to learn languages. Feel free to comment on the posts. And please be nice. (Every student has written an introductory post, usually accompanied by a photo. You can find them in the archives.)

Live Earth - by Laura

On July 7 this year, Live Earth presented for 24 hours concerts around the world: in Washington, New Jersey, Rio de Janeiro, London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Shanghai and Sydney. The reason for the event, organized by Al Gore, ex US vice-president and recent winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, was to rescue the Earth's climate. The idea behind Live Earth is to make a lot of people think about the climate and the consequences for the world and what they can do to help.
But I don't believe that these concerts can really help Thirld World countries. Surely, the money from Live Earth will go into a lot of social projects.
But I think most of the stars came to perform for a good cause and to present their interests. A lot of them have private airplanes and they often use them. In addition, many people drive big gas-guzzling SUVs and I don't believe that most of them are thinking enough about saving energy. Maybe they come to these concerts to enjoy the fantastic atmosphere and to relieve their conscience.

Dear Laura, I found your article very interesting. Just a few days ago I read a similar one in the Italian newspaper "la Repubblica" which said more or less the same: the presence of the international stars at these events can help to raise funds for a good case, but mainly it's just their way to relieve their conscience for living a life which does not consider or respect any of the arguments they represent at these concerts...
Congratulations, I'm looking forward for your next writing!
Laura (your namesake:)
